TEACHING ASSISTANTS
Here are posted short bios of Arne's teaching and marking assistants. If you are interested in applying for work as an assistant please contact Arne for further instructions and criteria. In general, all assistants must meet the following conditions:
1) be enrolled in a graduate programme (Masters or PhD level) at an accredited instutition, ideally in History or International Relations, although other programmes may be acceptable
2) be able and willing to work in accordance with the class timetables Arne has in the given term
3) be able and willing to work as part of a team and to have an interactive approach to teaching and learning
4) be genuinely committed to teaching with an obvious enthusiasm and desire to learn.
Megan Price
This fall Megan received her Master’s Degree from Ryerson and York Universities interdisciplinary Communication and Culture Programme. She is primarily interested in politics and policy issues. She explores the historical, political and social roots of resources management problems. Her Master’s thesis deals specifically with water management in Canada within the framework of a water-scarce world. Her BA is from Ryerson University in Radio and Television Arts. She took several courses in History including two with Arne. She also had Arne as her thesis supervisor during the MA. Between degrees she was a documentary television producer and manager. This is her second year as Teaching Assistant for Arne. She also served as a TA and marker for Rob Teigrob in History at Ryerson. She can be contacted at meganprice@ryerson.ca
Kris Kobold
Kris Kobold holds a Hon.B.A. and an M.A., both from the University of Toronto. Until recently, Kris had been enrolled in the Ph.D. programme at the Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto, studying Old English and Medieval Latin language and literature, before leaving that programme after three years to pursue a B.Ed. degree (English and History concentrations) at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education over the 2008-9 academic year. Kris seems to be making something of career of being a teaching assistant at Ryerson; apparently, he just can’t get enough of it! Heather Metcalfe
Heather Metcalfe recently finished her doctorate in History at the University of Toronto, specializing in the Canada’s role in international relations. Her dissertation, which focuses on public opinion and the entry into the Second World War, also deals with Quebec’s role within Canada, how Canadians define themselves and how Canadian shaped their perceptions of the international system. Davin Aldridge
Davin is a student of history specializing in 19th and 20th century international relations through US and British foreign policy, with specific emphasis on security and intelligence matters. He has a Masters of Arts in History from the University of Toronto (2008) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Technical Production from Ryerson University (2007). His research interests tend to focus on British foreign policy towards Europe typically looking at relationships with France and Germany, British and American intelligence issues, and American policy on Berlin in the Cold War. Davin plans on achieving a Bachelor of Education and a PhD in History in the near future. He can be reached at daldridg@ryerson.ca
Mike Sage
Mike Sage is an award-winning filmmaker and MFA student in Ryerson's Documentary Media program. He is predominantly interested in producing hybrid documentaries which explore social and scientific conundrums. His thesis documentary (www.survivalofthefabulous.com) tackles the history and evolutionary mystery of homosexuality, with research and interviews in Chicago, Washington DC, Lethbridge and Toronto ongoing. He received a BFA in film from Ryerson as well. During his tenure, he took nearly a dozen history courses, including three with Arne (International Relations: 1900-1945, Espionage and European History 1300-1700) as well as the Cold War, Understanding International Relations and the History of Science and Technology. Mike's multidisciplinary interests in history include both classical and modern European history, the development of science from the Victorian Era to the current day and the symbiotic connection and implementation of history and science in film, television and interactive gaming. Mike has also worked as a TA for documentary production and screenwriting in Ryerson's Image Arts. He produced infomercials (requiring international travel) between degrees and has edited several episodes of a hit cable makeover show. He can be contacted at msage@ryerson.ca.
Joao Simoes
Joao received his Hon.B.A. from the University of Toronto with a specialist in history (modern Germany) and his MA from Ryerson University's Immigration and Settlement Studies program. He survived with Arne as a supervisor for his major research paper. He is currently enrolled at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto in the B.Ed. program with history and politics as his two teachables. He is primarily interested in the intersections of nationalism, colonalism, and international relations. He also had Arne supervise his thesis during the MA. Joao has previously TAed for the sociology department. Joao likes long walks in the city (really!!!) and is a sucker for animals (I love cats). He can be reached at joaocarlos1.simoes@ryerson.ca .
